A core biopsy, also called a core needle biopsy, is a simple test that helps doctors check a lump or suspicious area in the body. During the procedure, the doctor uses a special hollow needle to take a small piece of tissue, about the size of a tiny cylinder. This sample is then examined under a microscope.
The test is usually done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. It is performed under local anesthesia, so the area will be numbed and you should only feel minimal discomfort. Sometimes, the doctor may use imaging tests such as ultrasound or X-ray to guide the needle to the right spot.
